The Builder's Ladder, grade by grade

Ten one-year syllabi. Each names its big question, its single new tool per semester, its units, and the capstone every student ships. Full teacher-ready markdown files are included in the curriculum package.

Foundations

G3–5

Grade 3 — Think Like a Builder

Ages 8–9 24 hours

“How do we give instructions so exactly that even a machine can follow them?”

  • Unplugged algorithms with body and cards
  • First ScratchJr stories with events and loops
  • Levers, cams, and linkages in cardboard
  • New tools: ScratchJr → Scratch · cardboard mechanisms

Automaton Theater

A hand-cranked cardboard automaton performs alongside its own animated digital backdrop.

Grade 4 — Make It Move

Ages 9–10 24 hours

“How do ideas become things that light up, move, and react?”

  • Events, loops, broadcast, and score variables
  • Circuit-as-loop: series vs parallel with copper tape
  • First user interviews and fair tests
  • New tools: Full Scratch · paper circuits

Arcade Expo

A playable Scratch game inside a decorated cardboard cabinet with a real light-up marquee.

Grade 5 — Sense the World

Ages 10–11 24 hours

“How can our creations sense the world and respond on their own?”

  • Sense–think–act with real sensors
  • A week of real data, charted and argued
  • Radio messages and privacy intuition
  • New tools: micro:bit + MakeCode

CAPSTONE

Smart Space

A micro:bit gadget that solves one real problem at home or school — pitched live in 90 seconds.

Bridge

G6–8

Grade 6 — Speak Robot

Ages 11–12 40 hours

“How do we teach a machine to act in the real world — and how does it learn?”

  • Line-following and maze escape missions
  • Same program in blocks and Python, side by side
  • Train a classifier — then honestly measure it
  • New tools: Wheeled robot · first Python (taster)

CAPSTONE

Rescue Rover

A tabletop disaster mission: follow the line, find the victim, signal, return. Two public attempts.

Grade 7 — The Power of Python

Ages 12–13 40 hours

“When does text beat blocks — and what can we build once it does?”

  • PRIMM and Parsons problems for real fluency
  • Functions, lists, and a 50-line program
  • Volts, amps, and a multimeter in your hands
  • New tools: Desktop Python (S1) · Arduino UNO (S2)

CAPSTONE

Sensor Station

Arduino logs the world, Python tells its story: one pipeline from sensor to chart to claim.

Grade 8 — Systems & Signals

Ages 13–14 40 hours

“What happens when devices talk to each other — and to models that learn?”

  • PWM, servos, and sensor smoothing
  • Machine learning, honestly: overfitting & confusion matrices
  • HTTP as letters; your data on a real dashboard
  • New tools: ESP32 + Wi-Fi

CAPSTONE

Connected Device

An IoT gadget with a live dashboard — shipped with its own one-page datasheet and privacy note.

Engineering

G9–10

Grade 9 — Intelligent Machines

Ages 14–15 48 hours

“How do we build machines that decide well when nobody is driving?”

  • OOP by refactoring your own robot code
  • Bang-bang to proportional control, tuned by hand
  • Vision pipelines and surveillance ethics
  • New tools: OpenCV computer vision

CAPSTONE

Autonomous Challenge

League-style tabletop autonomy: junction decisions, object handling, and a formal design review.

Grade 10 — Engineer Real Things

Ages 15–16 48 hours

“Can we ship something a real person uses — and stand behind it?”

  • Live dashboards fed by your own devices
  • Spec writing, scope cuts, risk registers
  • Accessibility testing with real screen readers
  • New tools: Web stack (HTML/CSS/JS)

CAPSTONE

Venture Studio

Teams take a real brief from a real client — discovery to build to user testing to public launch.

Frontier

G11–12

Grade 11 — Specialize & Go Deep

Ages 16–17 60 hours

“What kind of builder are you becoming?”

  • Choose one: Robotics Engineering · AI & ML · Creative Tech
  • Real git collaboration and technical writing
  • Engineering Review Board with outside guests
  • New tools: Track-specific: CAD & PID · scikit-learn · creative code

CAPSTONE

Track Masterwork

One deep artifact — competition robot, deployed model, or gallery installation — defended before a review board.

Grade 12 — Research & Responsibility

Ages 17–18 60 hours

“What should we build — and how do we know it works and does no harm?”

  • Reading real papers; designing real experiments
  • How big systems fail — and AI alignment, introduced
  • A ten-year portfolio, published
  • New tools: Research methods toolkit

CAPSTONE

Thesis & Defense

A year-long research capstone: proposal, evidence, an 8–12 page report, and a public defense.
